Save Error – An Attempt to Save the Document Failed

What causes the Save Error message and how to avoid issues with Case File storage locations.

If you see the message “Save Error – An attempt to save the document failed,” it usually means the Case File cannot write changes to its current storage location.

This can happen for several reasons related to where the Case File is stored or how it was accessed.

Potential Reasons for a Save Error

Unsupported Cloud Storage

This error commonly occurs when a Case File is stored in an unsupported cloud storage service, such as Dropbox.

Even temporarily moving a Case File into an unsupported cloud storage provider can corrupt the Case File. Once corrupted, the file may no longer save correctly.

Slow or Incompatible Storage Locations

Saving can fail if the Case File is stored in a location that is too slow for reliable access. Examples include:

  • A USB drive that is not formatted as APFS

  • A network share

  • Other external storage that does not provide consistent performance

Because Case Files are frequently updated while you work, slower storage locations may interrupt the save process.

Storage Location No Longer Available

This message may appear if the location where the Case File was opened from becomes unavailable. For example:

  • A USB drive was unplugged

  • A network share was disconnected

  • A cloud storage connection dropped

When the storage location disappears, the app can no longer save changes to the Case File.

Missing Write Permissions

If you do not have permission to write to the file or folder, the Case File cannot save changes.

When permissions are the cause, the error typically appears shortly after opening the Case File and will continue every time the app attempts to save.

Case Files should always be created and stored in the On My iPad or iCloud Drive locations. Please follow the directions in this important support article: Case File Storage Recommendations
