Assigning Bates Numbers in DocReviewPad

Apply Bates numbers to documents during import or later while organizing and reviewing case files.

Bates numbers can be applied when importing documents or later during review. DocReviewPad provides flexible options to control how the numbering appears on each page.

For information on customizing the appearance of Bates numbers, see Bates Stamp Options in DocReviewPad.

Organizing Before Bates Numbering

At the beginning of a case, import documents and organize them into folders such as exhibits or deposition transcripts.

Key pleadings—such as complaints, responses, and court orders—are often kept at the top level of the case.

Large PDFs are easier to manage if they are split into smaller sections before importing. This also helps ensure Bates numbers are applied in the intended order.

Understanding Numbering Order

When assigning Bates numbers to multiple folders, DocReviewPad applies numbering in alphanumeric order across all selected files, regardless of folder hierarchy.

This means the folders themselves do not determine the numbering order.

If certain documents need to receive numbers first, place them in a folder and assign Bates numbers to that folder before numbering the remaining documents.
