Flatten Layers in a PDF File

Ensure all elements in a PDF display correctly by flattening layers.

Some PDF files include multiple layers that can cause blank or missing pages when viewed in certain apps. Flattening the file merges all layers, ensuring all elements are visible and display as expected.

How to Flatten a PDF File in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC

Follow these steps to flatten your PDF using Adobe Acrobat Pro DC on a Mac. The process is similar on Windows.

  1. Open the PDF file in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC.

  2. Choose File > Export a PDF > PostScript.

  3. In the Save dialog:

    • Leave the Format set to PostScript.

    • Under Settings, leave the Printer Description File set to Device Independent.

  4. Click Save to create a new file with a .ps extension.

  5. In Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, choose File > Open….

  6. In the Open dialog, change Show to All Files, then open the .ps file you saved.

  7. Save the file again as a new PDF.

Your new PDF is now flattened and should display correctly in any app.
